The Squarespace Domains & Applications group is looking for a Backend Engineer to join our Domains Registrar team . As the foundation of a customer's digital presence, our domain products are critical to Squarespace’s mission. Our team is currently focused on architecting new products and expanding the feature set for one of the largest domain registrars in the world. In this role, you will focus on high-scale architecture, performance, and long-term scalability, contributing to the end-to-end development of components that power millions of digital identities. You will report to the Engineering Team Manager in Aveiro, Portugal , working in a hybrid capacity (minimum of 3 days per week in-office). You'll Get To… Ship Scalable Code: Help scale our services to meet the demands of a global product, ensuring our platform remains "rock solid" as we grow. Own the Lifecycle: Actively participate in the end-to-end development of multiple components, from initial architecture to production monitoring. Lead & Grow: Take ownership of well-scoped backend projects with guidance from senior engineers, providing a clear path for your professional growth into senior technical leadership. Collaborate Cross-Functionally: Work closely with Product, Design, Analytics, and Operations to understand user needs and translate them into elegant technical solutions. Advocate for Excellence: Improve the existing codebase by promoting disciplined software engineering practices, including automated testing, thorough code reviews, and high-quality documentation. Optimize Performance: Refine the performance of our applications and distributed databases to ensure a seamless customer experience. Who We're Looking For Technical Proficiency: You have 2+ years of experience developing production-level systems using Java, Kotlin , or similar Object-Oriented languages. Data-Fluent: You have 2+ years of experience working with relational databases (e.g., PostgreSQL, CockroachDB ) and a deep understanding of data structures and software design patterns. Craft-Oriented: You have a sincere commitment to writing "beautiful," readable code and a proactive approach to technical documentation. Product-Minded: You have a strong sense of ownership and curiosity about "the why" behind the features you build.
